We use a graduated approach to SEND support at Hebburn Comprehensive School. The image below outlines our Assess, Plan, Do, Review strategy to support all students to work hard, be kind and aspire.
The following strategies are just some of the ways we support out SEND learners:
- Embedded Quality First Teaching across all curriculums to meet the needs of all learners including those with SEND;
- A dedicated SEND team, who were closely with the student and parents to outline the most appropriate support for your child;
- Termly SEND Reviews, in addition to standard Parent’s evenings;
- A Pupil Profile for each SEND student which documents support that is available to the child;
- A Learning Support Plan that outlines personal targets to help support the SEND learner;
- Behaviour and achievement tracking of SEND students;
- A dedicated inclusion space used to reintegrate students back into lessons;
- Time-out passes and toilet passes (where appropriate, and supported with a diagnosis);
- Additional time or support in assessments (with appropriate diagnosis).
Inclusive Quality First Teaching is embedded across all curricula to meet the needs of all learners including those with SEND. All learners benefit from high-quality inclusive teaching, and it is an essential starting point in supporting those with SEND. These strategies include consistency in routines and behaviour across all lessons, chunked and scaffolded information, assessing for misconceptions, modelling new concepts and purposeful practice.
Pupil Profiles
To best meet the needs of your child we use Pupil Profiles at Hebburn, that allows you and your child to effectively communicate their needs and outline the support we have in place for that student. These profiles are quickly and easily available to all staff, to help them support your child in lesson. These profiles are made in collaboration with the learner, and are regularly reviewed to make any updates. Below is an example of a pupil profile.

Learning Support Plans
We regularly offer SEND review meetings with parents to assess how the current provision meets the needs of your child. We encourage the attendance of your child to this session, as it allows them to have a voice in the support they receive in school. During this meeting, we agree and outline areas of strength and any areas of concern. We then agree on a Plan that sets out achievable, measurable goals for the student, and how they will be supported in meeting that goal. This is then reviewed on a termly basis, and new targets can be set. Below is an example of a Learning Plan.
Zones of Regulation
Zones of Regulation is a targeted strategy we employ in school to help support learners who are struggling, particularly with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) issues. These sessions are either individual or small group, and help students to process, understand and manage their emotions – not just in school, but in daily life.
Interventions
An intervention is a targeted approach to supporting students who aren’t making their expected progress academically. These interventions are used to support students in a wide range of ways, from support with literacy, reading, writing, mathematics, or subject specific interventions.
We work closely with external services, to help support students where more support than the targeted strategies is needed. This might be to pursue a diagnosis or provide students with specialist care and support from a specialist.
